    Zero Deforestation Commitment

For the conservation and preservation of forests and biodiversity
    (OVERVIEW)

    Zero Deforestation by 2030

The high level of deforestation and its repercussions in terms of the loss of biodiversity and impact on climate change, reinforce the need and the urgency to develop and implement a Zero Deforestation commitment that is ambitious and whose implementation guarantees effective results. In this sense, Sonae companies aim to ensure, by 2030, the absence of deforestation in operations and supply chains, particularly in countries with the highest risk of deforestation and associated with commodities such as cattle, wood, palm oil and soy. Additionally, Sonae companies aim to ensure “zero deforestation” in the development of new infrastructure and to contribute positively to the conservation and restoration of forests.
In 2023, and in line with the Carbon Disclosure project, progress towards Zero Deforestation was determined for our own brand products with the following critical commodities.
Overall, the current progress for MC, Worten and Zeitreel is considered to be 58% deforestation-free (according to the criteria of sourcing these commodities from non-risk countries or if the commodities hold a relevant third-party certification (for instance FSC, RSPO)). When key information is not available (such as the country of origin) the commodities are assumed as potentially contributing to deforestation and trigger further efforts of engaging with suppliers to improve and increase traceability. For Sierra, as no new infrastructure or expansions were developed in Forest Risk Countries, no conversion/deterioration of natural
    forest, following IFC guidelines, occurred.

    COMMITMENT 2022

At least until 2030, ensure 100% sustainable sourcing of critical commodities and sourced from risk countries

From 2022 100% new installations and projects follow the IFC Performance standard

Collaborate in initiatives that aim preserving and regenerating natural forests and promoting a widespread fight against deforestation

Participate in collaboration networks and workgroups focused on deforestation-related knowledge development and exchange

Track, report and publicly share information on  the  control and traceability mechanisms, origin and source of deforestation-related commodities
