(overview)
Environmental certification programs
Sonae acknowledges its direct and indirect dependency on, and influence over, natural ecosystems, stemming from its activities, products, and services. This awareness is reflected in a strong commitment to reducing the environmental impacts of its operations, implemented through a strategic sustainability approach focused on decarbonization, circularity, biodiversity, and water management. This approach is grounded in a systemic materiality assessment process, ensuring alignment with the most relevant environmental risks and opportunities.
At the environmental management level, Sonae adopts a proactive stance across its value chain, identifying key environmental impacts and managing associated risks. This commitment materializes in the definition of environmental policies, objectives, and targets, the implementation of effective management practices, and the systematic monitoring of performance indicators, in line with industry best practices and regulatory developments.
To ensure continuous improvement and strict compliance with applicable legislation, Sonae group companies have implemented environmental certification programs within their Environmental Management Systems (EMS). Currently, 65% of Sonae’s business activities are certified under international standards (ISO 14001, JIS Q 14001, EMAS certification), with audits conducted by accredited and independent bodies. These systems not only ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements but also enhance operational efficiency and external credibility.
Sierra stands out with 100% of its consolidated operations certified, demonstrating a consistent commitment to responsible and structured environmental management.
In addition to ISO 14001 certification, Sonae integrates other relevant frameworks, particularly in the textile sector. For instance, Salsa’s laundry facility is certified under GOTS, OCS, RCS, STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, and HIGG FEM standards, reflecting a rigorous and integrated approach to controlling environmental impacts throughout the supply chain.
These certifications are supported by regular external audits and ongoing monitoring processes, ensuring the robustness and effectiveness of management systems and alignment with international best practices.
Acknowledging the specificities of each business sector, some group companies have formalized their own policies. Worten has published its new Sustainability Policy, while Sierra has established its Health, Safety, and Environmental Policy, both reflecting clear commitments to minimizing the environmental impacts of their respective operations and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
